Summary

Covers Nepal's full energy balance for FY 2079/80 (~2022/23), including all energy sources (not just electricity). Provides the broader context for where grid electricity fits within Nepal's total energy system. This is the authoritative denominator for every "hydro share of total energy" claim.

Key Data Points (FY 2079/80)

  • Total final energy consumption: 532.42 PJ (−16.81% YoY vs 640 PJ in FY 2078/79)
  • Consumption by resource class:
    • Traditional biomass: 63.87% (340.04 PJ) — fuelwood, ag residue, animal dung
    • Commercial fuels: 25.80% (137.38 PJ) — coal, petrol, diesel, kerosene, LPG, ATF, furnace oil
    • Grid electricity: 7.23% (38.49 PJ) — up from ~4.96% in FY 2078/79 (+21.18% YoY)
    • Modern renewables: 3.10% (16.50 PJ) — biogas, solar, micro-hydro, wind
  • Coal consumption down −41.50% YoY; petroleum products down −16.14% YoY
  • Sectoral shares:
    • Residential 60.75% (323,463 TJ)
    • Industrial 20.91% (111,306 TJ)
    • Transportation 10.43% (55,553 TJ)
    • Commercial 5.04% (26,835 TJ)
    • Construction/Mining 1.92% (10,222 TJ)
    • Agriculture 0.95% (5,040 TJ)
  • Hydropower capacity referenced: 3,349 MW installed, 9,940.86 GWh generated (FY 2023/24)
  • Transmission system: 5,742 circuit-km at 66 kV+; 8,867 MVA substation capacity

Correction note

Earlier wiki pages cite grid electricity as 4.96% of final energy. That figure was the FY 2078/79 value that appears in this report's historical prose. The FY 2079/80 headline figure is 7.23%. Both are correct for their respective years; the 2.3-point jump in one year reflects real electrification growth. Full cross-tab decoded at Nepal Final Energy Mix.

Local PDF status

The local file at data/raw/core/wecs_energy_sector_synopsis_2024.pdf is now a real PDF copy of the report, verified locally as a 167-page PDF. The external source_url above remains the canonical public URL.

Limitations

  • Single-year snapshot: FY 2079/80 data; YoY comparisons (e.g., −16.81% total final energy) are sensitive to single-year anomalies such as fuel price shocks or demand disruptions.
  • Local copy status: The repository copy has been verified as a 167-page PDF, but future extraction should still cross-check against the external source_url.
  • Biomass estimates: The 63.87% traditional biomass share relies on survey assumptions and stock-flow models, not metered consumption data.
  • Grid-electricity share jump: The 4.96% → 7.23% jump in one year may reflect both real electrification growth and improvements in measurement coverage.

Relevance to Project

The 7.23% grid-electricity share — and the fact that hydro is only ~6.8% of Nepal's total final energy — is one of the most revealing data points in the entire project. It collapses the "Nepal is a hydropower country" framing into the more honest "Nepal has a hydropower electricity system inside a biomass-and-petroleum energy system."
