Summary
The most current official snapshot of Nepal's electricity system. Covers installed capacity, generation mix, trade volumes, grid infrastructure, and project pipeline for fiscal year 2024/25 (Nepali FY 2081/82).
Image Catalog
This run is ingesting roughly 130 images from the FY 2024/25 annual report; the current atlas pass surfaced 131 real-image candidates for review. The atlas manifest lives at nea_annual_report_2024_2025_image_atlas.json.
Key Data Points
- Total installed generation capacity: 3,591.262 MW (hydro 3,389.912 MW, solar 141.940 MW, thermal 53.410 MW, bagasse 6 MW)
- Hydropower is 94.4% of installed generation
- System peak demand reached 2,901 MW on July 1, 2025
- Per-capita electricity consumption reached 465 kWh
- Total system loss declined to 12.26%
- National grid coverage reached 97.6%
- 22 new projects (434 MW combined) commissioned in FY 2024/25
- Available energy: 15,641 GWh (34% NEA/subsidiaries, 55% IPPs, 11% imported from India)
- Kulekhani Cascade generated 279.8 GWh
- Tanahu Hydropower Project approximately 67% complete
- 572 projects in broader license pipeline (311 survey, 180 generation, 81 operation)
Relevance to Project
Primary source for current installed capacity, fleet composition, generation split, and trade volumes. Supersedes older NEA FY 2022/23 data in several legacy summaries.
Limitations
- Snapshot date: FY 2024/25 (through mid-2025). Post-mid-2025 capacity additions, trade shifts, and commissioning outcomes are not covered.
- NEA-only perspective: Does not capture IPP financials, non-NEA grid data, or private developer construction timelines.
- Reconciliation gap with World Bank: The World Bank 2025 Economic Memo cites ~2,990 MW by end-2024 vs this report's 3,591 MW. The difference reflects date gaps, not error — both are correct at their respective cutoff dates.
- Missing granularity: No monthly generation/trade breakdown, no plant-level curtailment data, no audited financial statements (those live in a separate document).
What This Source Does Not Cover
- Seasonal monthly breakdown of generation and trade
- Plant-level curtailment data
- Audited financial statements (separate document)
